Production of monoclonal antibodies
Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) can be produced for almost any antigen or epitope. These are the basis for various immunological-based detection methods, such as diagnostic ELISA tests. Unlike polyclonal antibodies, monoclonal antibodies are only produced by one B-cell clone (monoclonal) and therefore bind highly specifically to the epitope of the desired target structure.
In our research area at the fzmb, we develop monoclonal and, if necessary, polyclonal antibodies for immunological detection methods for use in diagnostics.
Monoclonal antibodies are produced using hybridoma technology in the mouse host organism. Our antibody production is compliant with ISO 9001 and production of antibodies under ISO 13485 is possible on request.

Advantages of monoclonal antibodies
- No batch variance
- High specificity and selectivity
- continuous mAb secretion
Matched Pair Capture & Detektion Antibodies
We offer antibody characterization for rapid downstream development. Also finding the best matched pair capture & detection antibodies for immunoassays is one of our services. Our antibody (sets) are therefore suitable for high-quality and effective test systems such as ELISA or lateral flow assays.
Production of (equivalent) antigens
In addition to antibody production, we can also produce the equivalent antigen. Antigens are, for example, recombinant and native proteins, peptides, microorganisms and their structures.
Overview of the mAb production service portfolio
- Procurement or production of the antigen
- Immunization of laboratory animals (mouse)
- Checking the immune response by titration of the sera
- Generation of antibody-producing clones using hybridoma technology
- Screening of clones for secretion of antibodies (expression performance)

Legionella ssp. (various servovars)
Monoclonal Legionella antibodies
Legionella are gram-negative, aerobic bacteria. According to the RKI, over 60 species with almost 80 different serogroups are known. Legionella can multiply inside cells, especially in water in free-living amoebae, but also in human macrophages and are therefore facultative intracellular parasites. Legionella find ideal growth conditions at temperatures between 25 and 45° C.
In principle, all Legionella are to be classified as potentially pathogenic to humans. In Europe, approx. 90 % of illnesses are caused by Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (approx. 80 %) and serogroups 4 and 6 (together approx. 20 %). (Source: RKI).

Staphylococcus aureus (resistance/virulence)
Detection of methicillin-resistant S. aureus
Methicillin-resistant S. aureus strains (MRSA) are characterized by the fact that they are resistant not only to all β-lactam antibiotics currently available on the market, but also to the penicillase-stable antibiotics methicillin and oxacillin. The cause of this resistance lies in the mecA gene, which encodes a modified penicillin-binding protein (PBP2a). An infection can cause serious illnesses such as pneumonia, bone or heart valve infections, especially in weakened people.
Resistance marker penicillin binding protein 2a (PBP2a)
PBP2a stands for penicillin-binding protein 2a and is responsible for resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. PBP2a confers resistance to methicillin, penicillin and related ß-lactam antibiotics.
Overview antibodies & hybridoma cell lines
We offer the following monoclonal antibodies and AK-producing hybridoma cell lines against penicillin-binding protein 2a (PBP2a).
The antibodies produced by the hybridoma cell lines PBP-003 and PBP-012 together form a matched pair. This pair of capture and detector antibodies binds to different epitopes of the protein and thus enables specific detection of the resistance marker PBP2a.

Virulence marker Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)
Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is a strong virulence factor of Staphylococcus aureus. This exotoxin leads to the lysis of leukocytes by forming pores in the cytoplasmic membrane. PVL-producing S. aureus pathogens are highly pathogenic and cause severe infections of the skin and soft tissue, including lethal pneumonia.
The antibodies produced by the hybridoma cell lines LUK-002 and LUK-003 together form a matched pair. The two antibodies bind specifically to different regions of the PVL toxin and thus enable high sensitivity and specificity in the identification of PVL-expressing S. aureus strains.

Mycotoxins
Detection of mycotoxins
Mycotoxins (mold toxins) are metabolic products formed by fungi that can be found in agricultural products and foodstuffs. Mycotoxins can have various toxic effects on vertebrates even in very small quantities. A disease caused by this is known as mycotoxicosis. The most frequently occurring mycotoxins are the mycotoxins deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEA) produced by the genus Fusarium.
